SPOT LIGHT ON: ORGANIC FOODS

Recycling InformationBy buying organic produce it reduces the use of  chemical pesticides, which damage the environment and have been linked to diseases and contamination our water supply.

Organic food is a big growth industry in particular box schemes that deliver vegetables to your door.

‘Green food’ is not just a case of whether or not it is grown organically.

Food transport in itself accounts for at least 25% of the HGV traffic on our roads, with large supermarkets squeezing small local producers who can struggle to make a living

The key to ‘Green food
BUY LOCAL

Seasonal food –British tomatoes out of season (even if local) require heaters and lights and so less environmentally friendly, than importing where climates favour their growth.

Vegetarian/vegan food
Energy is lost at each additional step in the food chain! 90% of the suns energy is lost in converting grass to cattle.  Vegetarian/Vegan food reduces the number of steps in the food chain, and so less of the earth’s resources are used.

Unprocessed food
Prepare your own food at home! Not only does it save you money, it reduces demand for companies that mass produce food.  In order to make profits primary ingredients are transported from great distances-increase energy consumption and packaging.  Packaging not only uses valuable resources but is often non biodegradable and not recycled.
