SPOT LIGHT ON: GREEN ENERGY
We all know that oil is a fossil fuel and will eventually run out – or become uneconomical to mine. Political instability is impacting the supply and the growth of developing countries like China that account for one sixth of the worlds population increases demand.
There are other options – you can use bio diesel – that is run a diesel car on vegetable oil – a renewable energy source. Hybrid and electric cars with new technology are becoming more viable.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a 'greener' fuel, because it emits fewer harmful emissions than petrol. Cars running on alternative fuels such as LPG are exempt from the Congestion Charge in London, duty is lower and some vehicles receive a reduction in car tax. You can buy a car with factory fitted lpg systems, or can get a lpg system installed, this typically costs between £1500 and £1200.

Bio diesel, yes you can run a diesel car on part vegetable oil, Vegetable oil is an infinite resource, produces 80% less carbon monoxides and between 20% and 50% of the other pollutants. However in the UK there is currently duty payable on any vegetable oil that you use as fuel. You can also buy bio-diesel from a number of garages, or make it using kits you can purchase. Also be aware of the customs and exercise rules of retaining recipes if you make your own bio-diesel.

Electric cars have come a long way with top speeds of up to 40 mph and ranges of 40 miles, suitable for urban short journeys. The costs of fuel for electric cars can be as little as 1p a mile, and if you use a green electricity provider even better. Electric cars are also exempt from the London Congestion charge.

There are also a number of hybrid fuel cars on the market aiming to give you a range associated with traditional fueled cars with the benefits of electric for urban driving.
